Welcome to Luxury Tours of Mount Vernon

A Passionate Traveler

Enhance your travels and explore new local experiences with a passionate traveler like yourself as your own private Tour Guide.

When I’m not outdoors looking for the next great adventure, I spend my time doing research and exploring new possibilities to help keep my tours fresh, interesting, and relevant. Have a look at all the great options in the Mount Vernon area, and get in touch with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Your concierge tour will be led by a long time local resident who lives on land once part of the original Mount Vernon Estate.  He is a former Mount Vernon Estate history interpreter who retired from the US Department of State.

I am offering the full day 8-9 hour private tour for $185 per person, including Mount Vernon admission fees! (minimum 2 persons).

I am also offering 4+ hour private tours for $95 per person, including Mount Vernon admission fees! (minimum 2 persons)

Pickup and return free to Alexandria area hotels or Huntington metro station (Yellow line).  Call or email about pickup and return to National Harbor and Arlington VA. hotels.

Custom Private Tours

When you visit a new destination do you enjoy touring with your own professional guide? Do you like hearing the local perspective on the sites you are visiting? If so, then this full day tour is a great choice for you. Luxury Tours of Mount Vernon is ready to serve your every need. From helping you plan a detailed itinerary, to providing luxury transportation and commentary, all you need to do is sit back, relax, and explore.

There is no better way to see and enjoy the wonderful historic sites just outside Washington, DC. Getting to Mount Vernon and the other sites is not easy on your own, even with a car, and large tour buses provide no flexibility, visit at the busiest times, and give you the feeling of being herded.

This is a private tour. We will not add others to your group, but you may if you wish.

Options for the Tour

It's your day and we will pamper you and organize the day to fit your interests, preferences, and endurance. The Mount Vernon Estate and colonial Virginia, of course, is the focus of the tour, but there is so much more to see within a short driving distance. You choose the itinerary and length of time at each stop.

Sites may include (depending on your preferences, time, the season and weather):

  • A driving tour of colonial Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

  • Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens (home of George and Martha Washington, our nation’s first President)

  • Tomb of George and Martha Washington

  • George Washington’s Grist Mill and Distillery

  • Woodlawn Plantation (built for Washington’s step grand-daughter, Nellie Custis)

  • Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House

  • Woodlawn Quaker Meetinghouse

  • Pohick Church (where George Washington worshipped)

  • Gunston Hall Plantation (home of George Mason, Virginia representative to the Constitutional Convention and proponent of the Bill of Rights)

  • A drive down the beautiful George Washington Parkway

  • A walk along the Potomac on the Mount Vernon Trail

  • Fort Hunt (secret site of a former German POW camp)

  • The gardens of River Farm (one of George Washington’s five farms and home of the American Horticultural Society)

  • Huntley Meadows Park (wetlands boardwalk and birdwatching)

  • The Variety Store (an old fashioned Five and Dime)

  • Views of Fort Washington

  • The Custard Shop (yummy old fashioned custard at the end of the tour)

  • The Museum of the United States Army (coming in June 2020)

  •  Plus inside tips from a local

This is not a pre-set package – you choose the stops that best meet your interests. Some sites mentioned are open only on certain days and seasons, but Mount Vernon is open every day. Our tours are available all year, seven days a week.

At Mount Vernon, your guide will lead you through the extensive grounds, but Mount Vernon docents will lead you on a public tour through the Mansion itself. The same is true for Woodlawn and Gunston Hall. We will obtain your Mount Vernon tickets before we pick you up in order to minimize any wait times at the Mansion. A private tour will be given at Pohick Church (built in 1774) and other sites.

How much walking will be involved in the tours?

There will be as much as you desire – it’s your day! Mount Vernon is quite large, but wheel chairs can be provided if necessary and we have room for a walker.  To be honest, though, it will be a full day with quite a bit of walking to take full advantage of the sites.  But it’s your tour, so we’ll rest and take breaks whenever you desire. We will provide cold water and umbrellas if necessary.

What should I wear on the tour?

Dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes.  In summer, shorts are fine and a hat is a good idea.  In winter, wear gloves, scarfs, and coats.

Is the tour appropriate for children?

Yes, it can be a long day, but children over five are welcome. We can customize the tour to help keep them engaged and having fun.

Are you affiliated with the Mount Vernon Estate?

No, we are an independent local tour company that specializes in concierge tours to a number of historical sites in the Mount Vernon district of Fairfax County, Virginia, including the Mount Vernon Estate, Woodlawn Plantation, Gunston Hall, and Pohick Church.

What is your cancellation policy?

We cannot refund cancellations within 24 hours of the tour.

The best way to check available dates or ask questions is by the Inquiries form at the top and bottom of the webpage, or by email at luxurytoursofmountvernon@gmail.com.  If we are unable to respond immediately it’s probably because we are leading a tour, but we will get back to you within 24 hours. Our phone number is 703-403-5686. Feel free to text or call any time if you prefer, or fill out the "Book Your Tour" form below and we will be in touch.

Once we have confirmed availability and tour preferences, we will confirm the date and send you an invoice. Please be sure to let us know the number of guests joining the tour.

To understand George Washington better, I suggest reading His Excellency George Washington by Joseph Ellis or, for dedicated fans, George Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow (817 pages).  For a lighter and fun read, I suggest the recently published You Never Forget Your First by Alexis Coe. I also highly recommend watching the three-part History Channel series,Washington, prior to your visit.
